Charity Walk

Winter turned to glorious summer in time for the Managementors charity walk along the Thames Path from Goring to Oxford. After an early start a team of 10 strode off across Goring Bridge and then promptly strode back again after realising that they were, in fact, heading in the wrong direction! Fortunately this was the only navigational error of the day and from then on the team marched on towards their overnight stop. A brief stop in Wallingford saw stomachs and the collecting cans filled up as the residents gave generously towards Cancer Research. As the temperature rose the thought of the pub at the end of the day raised the tempo and after a final shortcut across a field and over a smelly ditch (legs were getting very tired!) the Railway Inn came into view. Again we were amazed by the generosity of people, as we found two bottles of wine on each of the dinner tables kindly donated by one of the pub customers who had recently lost his father to cancer.

It’s surprising how many trains use the line to Oxford, so if anyone plans using the Railway Inn in Culham, there is a gap in the trains between 2:35am and 3:15am if you fancy some sleep!

Suitably refreshed the next morning the team began the final leg of the walk into Oxford. The plan was to do it without stopping and get there by lunchtime. Somehow, however, Google (let’s blame it on Google) managed to under-estimate the distance by 4 miles and the constant stream of people wanting to donate meant that progress was slower than expected. The number of people who stopped to give money, and who had a story to tell about people they know who had cancer, was both sobering and heart-warming.

As legs began to weary a final collection in a pub (and a pint of cider) saw us reach Oxford, where after a brief celebration we caught the train back to the start. With spirits only slightly deflated at the sight of the Railway Inn flashing past after only 15 minutes on the train, the team finally arrived back in Goring – tired and sunburnt but with a sense of achievement at having walked 34 miles in two days and raising over £440.00 for Cancer Research through the collection tins, in addition to many other generous donations we received in support of this event.
