A group of Managementors’ staff recently embarked on a 30-mile walk along the Kennet and Avon Canal from Pewsey to Midgham as this year’s team building exercise. After convening at Reading Station at midday, the team of 12, accompanied by a four-legged friend, caught the train to Pewsey to begin the first leg of the walk.
On arrival at Pewsey, we faced our first challenge – which direction to walk out of the train station! With a little help from google maps, we embarked on the first half of the walk. The forecasted rain showers luckily held off, until we conveniently took a ‘detour’ to the pub for a water break. After taking shelter for a few minutes, and having had a quick refresher, we embarked on the rest of the day’s walk.
Approaching the last mile on the first day, stomachs were grumbling and mouths watering, yet before we knew it we were walking through the streets of Hungerford towards the hotel for an overnight stop. Everyone celebrated in the hotel garden with a much needed cold beverage, followed by a tasty dinner and then retired for a restful night’s sleep in preparation for the second half of the walk.
Mostly revitalised the next morning, everyone enjoyed a hearty breakfast and began the final leg of the walk to Midgham. The plan was to have a quick stop in Newbury and then carry on through to Midgham for a late lunch. Aside from the intermittent rain showers, team morale was kept high with encouragement and sugary sweets; however, it was clear that bodies were beginning to tire. After a few, ‘there is only half an hour to go’ reminders, and an unplanned extra 2 miles, everyone eventually made it to Midgham. We celebrated our achievement by enjoying a delicious lunch and a refreshing drink, and then separated ways to head back home for a well-deserved rest.
Whilst a challenge, the two days provided a great chance for members of the company to catch up and chat with those they don’t often see during working hours, helping to enhance the nurturing ethos of Managementors.
